“You Tell Me” Edition of Weekend Links

Personal update: I’m still visiting my daughter overseas and I made a commitment to unplug as much as possible while I’m here. The trip has been wonderful so far. I’ve had a ton on time with my daughter. One of the most wonderful gifts she’s given me is to see her grow up and become very independent while holding on to her charm and grace.

I think that when I go home next week, I’ll be even more at ease knowing she can fend for herself quite nicely thank you.

Speaking of fending for yourself, I didn’t do such a great job driving to her apartment after dropping her off at school. I went left when I should have turned right and almost ended up in Jordan! They don’t call me the Pilgrim for nothing!

Back to business.

As a result of the promise I made to unplug, I have kept my internet and computer activity to a minimum. Therefore, I don’t have any suggested reading for you this weekend.

But I’m sure there have been some fantastic posts and I’m sorry I’ve missed them.

I’d like to ask you to chime in here with some suggested reading (for me and all the other Pilgrims). I don’t care if you read it or wrote it. In fact, if you wrote it, all the better. Tell us why that particular post really meant something to you.

Let us know the title and location and what you liked about it. All subjects are fair game. Thanks.

Enjoy a great weekend with your family.

Though this is obviously a little self-serving, I started a new blog last month dedicated to credit card education. LearnCreditCards.com. It’s got about 30 articles on it so far, and will continue to have 5 new full-length articles per week indefinitely. :)

I wrote a post this week about phone insurance and my investigation of whether it’s worth it. I like this post because it has practical application and hopefully everyone will be able to learn something from it and apply that knowledge in other situations as well.

Here’s a link to my blog entry from Tuesday, entitled “Buy-and-Hold Investing Doesn’t Work — These Links Prove It!”:

    http://arichlife.passionsaving.com/2009/11/17/buy-and-hold-investing-doesnt-work-these-links-prove-it/

The academic research has shown for 28 years that the odds of Buy-and-Hold working out for the long-term investor are precisely zero. But not too many of the “experts” in The Stock-Selling Industry have seen fit to share this important news with middle-class investors. The 20 links show that that is beginning to change in the wake of last year’s stock crash.

My favorite of the quotes is the one by Rob Arnott (who is the former editor of the Financial Analysts Journal). Arnott describes the conventional investing wisdom of the past 30 years as the product of “myth and urban legend.” That’s my take as well.

    Rob
