Right on. There’s no better way to learn than by teaching. Just the process of trying to work out a good way to explain something has a wonderful way of clarifying your own thoughts about it.

Every other week I have to teach an advanced estate planning class to the financial planners in my office.

The topics I have taught others are the ones I understand the best.

My dad was a professor at a local junior college, and always told me that the best way to learn something better is to teach it. He was actually working towards his master’s degree at the same time as he was teaching, and some of the classes overlapped. He did very, very well in those classes, not because he knew the material, but also because the students had different perspectives and shared those in class, and he was able to really wrap his mind around whatever subject that happened to be.

Yes…..It’s wild…….Had any of us waited to be given permission to teach or write……our blogs wouldn’t be out there. The fact that they continue to exist means SOMEBODY is getting value. Hence, even though none of us have all the knowledge we’d like to have….it doesn’t mean that the knowledge we DO have can’t help others.

Great post Neal, I’ve really found in the last year and a half in posting at my blog – trying to teach and help others about money – that I’ve learned more about personal finance than I ever could have imagined. As you mention, I don’t think we need to be “experts” to teach others, we just need to have some level of knowledge, and the yearning to know more – and pass on that knowledge. Great post!

Great post! It’s so true that when you really want to learn something yourself you teach it to someone else. A lot of people (myself included) think they have to have all the answers before they can teach someone else, but if we waited for that we’d never teach! We teach what we need to learn, it’s a constant process.
