I met my daughter near UCLA yesterday for some tea and laughs. We always have fun together – at least she still laughs at my jokes…and that, my friends, is a rare find these days.
While we were together, I couldn’t help but notice all the people walking around with their noses in their cell phones. A few students were even doing so while crossing the street. Other people were texting while driving. Not only is this a profound waste of opportunities to drink in all the wonderful things going on around, it’s also deadly dangerous. This behavior could really hurt lots of innocent people, so let’s not be so selfish.
OK?
So, for this weekend, stomp out your cell phone – at least when you go outside. I’m going to do it. I’m even considering getting rid of the internet coverage on my phone.

I agree! Some time ago, I remember hearing that using a cell phone while driving impairs the driver as much as drinking alcohol. Texting while walking is similar! What could be so important that could not be stopped for seconds, minutes or an hour or two? I don’t know!
@krantcents – I totally believe that. I remember about 10 years ago, one of our local news stations did a story on how to identify a potentially drunk driver on the road (based on behavior) so that you can avoid getting to close to them. That list of behaviors has been in my head for years and in the past 5-6 years, every time I’ve spotted someone who meets ALL the criteria and go to pass them, one glance almost always reveals someone text or messing with their phone while driving.
Thanks for the mention, Neal!
Interesting. I while back I decided to not walk around campus with my iPod because I felt it shut me off from everyone else a little too much. Not that I’m on campus much but you never know when you might run into someone and make a positive connection.
Thanks for the mention.
