It was like having permission to be a little naughty! Taking just a half day off let them celebrate their birthday with their friends at school and then have them envious that they got to leave school early. It was so cool! (I don't go anyway - I'm a veggie). When I was a kid growing up in a large family, my Dad would take just the birthday person out to eat anywhere they wanted. Then we would go home for cake and icecream with the family. I loved that! Large families didn't go out to eat often so it was a real treat. (and cheaper for my Dad!) I try and do this with each of my 2 boys (we don't call it a date, it's known as "Man Time"). It's great because we can just do what each of them want to do, which is never ever the same thing. Money saving or not it's an investment in your kids and that's a solid line item on the budget. Great reminder that I need to do that again this summer.
