Not only should she separate the finances, but she should file her own taxes immediately.

This is some solid advice for an unfortunate situation. The biggest thing I think here is making sure you separate the finances as best you can..odds are you'll already be getting a little extra attention when you do file so clarity is key. The marriage counselor and a CPA are probably both necessary and good ideas too. I hope it works out for "B"

Get out now...
If I'm understanding what I've read it appears that this man has now asked you to help mitigate his loss (or in less PC terms "cover-up his mess") by asking you to file the previous returns jointly. This also puts your own future in jeopardy. Does that sound like a man who has your family's best interest in mind?
I speak so directly bc I too was blindsided by a similar situation after my first year of marriage and it has cost me dearly. If you choose to help him clean-up his mess today; you will continue to do it for the rest of your married life. Certainly just my 2c but been there.

Wow that's a hard case! Personally I would threat divorce as the fees and taxes could ruin the children's lives! If the guy is sensible then he will get his act together and build his own way out..... Get extra work, whatever it takes to secure his children's future from misery.... Just my take!

Hopefully it won't lead to divorce.
