Here's an email I just received:

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that the only thing I have done to commemorate this day is to fly our flag and think about the terrible loss of lives and impact on those families 8 years ago.

However, one thing I have been taught to do by a family member you can do on any day that you have the opportunity and that is to pick up the lunch tab for firefighters and policemen when you see them in restaurants. This can be handled anonymously by asking to speak to the manager and arranging to have their lunch put on your bill. I have been a witness to this when my 89 year old aunt wished to make this gesture in earlier this year.

She wanted to offer her thanks in person and they all came to our table and thanked her and made her day! My cousin did this also but did not want to be publicly recognized--personally I think it's good to let other diners see that this can be done.

Good luck with the Brownies!
