High School Prom 1, Frugal Father 0

Here’s a quick video discussing the issue of frugality and quality of life.  I recently realized that splurging on important events can reinforce the value of frugality and bring more meaning to life.  I never thought I’d think this way – let alone say this….but here’s the proof.  Email subscribers may want to click here to visit the site in order to view the video.

I love the point you make here. The entire reason we save, cut costs, and so on is to be able to spend money on other things.

I once heard Ramit Sethi say something to the effect of “Spend extravagantly on things you care about, and cut costs mercilessly on those you don’t.”

Thanks Oblivious Investor. My experience is that I had to open to the message before I could hear it. I think that is the true value of blogging…..the message is everywhere waiting for us to be open to it.

I’m thrilled that your daughter is about to have the “time of her life”. Let me tell you from experience…this will not be her last prom or formal dance. Next year and the following years she will want to go again. Do you still spend the big bucks for the “time of her life” again?? My girls were really great about such matters. They went to thrift shops and picked up three gowns under for under $50 total and picked their favorite to wear. Next year they traded. I cooked a fabulous dinner for them at home and their dates polished up their cars to show them off. They had a blast!! Remember, it’s not the “stuff” it’s the people!!

Great reminders. Sounds like your children are on a great path. You must have started talking about these issues when they were young.
